When we hear about San Diego divorce cases being filed and litigated and they involve someone we know, it can bring about a strange wave of emotions that range from pity to sorrow to empathy. However, the findings of a recently released study reveal that the news regarding a divorce within an established social circle can also bring about feelings that could lead to additional divorces.
These findings were published recently, and one of the main contributors to this study was James Fowler of the University of California at San Diego. Specifically, the study showed that being friends with a couple that is getting a divorce can lead to an increase in the possibility of divorce within that marriage by a factor of as much as 75 percent.
While no tangible reasons were specifically offered for this 75 percent increase in the likelihood of divorce when someone in a social network begins such a process, Dr. Fowler did offer basic emotional reasoning for this increase. Specifically, many people view divorce as a social taboo and something that’s utterly terrible to experience until they see it happening with someone they know.
Familiarity with this process can break down many different fears and hesitations, and this along with the ability to move through a divorce with more ease than in generations past based on the lack of social stigma can lead to less reticence with the idea. However, once again, the findings of this study have been limited to their statistical nature at this point.
