Many in society believe that after a couple has been married for many years that they will almost certainly remain so for the rest of their lives. However, recent surveys and studies have revealed that the divorce rate for spouses 50 and over has skyrocketed in recent years. This finding has led many researchers to take a closer look at how and why this is happening, and as they do so they are discovering more surprises relating to this issue.

One such surprise involves a study that was completed in 2004 but only recently publicized that was done by the AARP, or the American Association of Retired People. The study found that of the more than 1,100 people interviewed for the study, almost two-thirds of the divorces that began with those who ended their marriages in the group were initiated by the wives. What was somewhat troubling was that of the women who had initiated these divorces, abuse was cited as the reason more often than any other stated cause.

In addition, more than one third of the children of these marriages that ended in divorce were supportive of the decision of their parents, while another 17 percent stated that they were tolerant of the decision. Another 20 percent of the children of these marriages were somewhat upset and 18 percent of them were very upset with this development.
